A historical and literary tale about those who chose the mountains to be free
After the great 2024 evening with “In capo al mondo. In viaggio con Walter Bonatti”, Teatro Invito returns to Valdidentro with a new lecture-performance dedicated to the mountains, history and the desire for freedom.
With “I ribelli della montagna”, Ruggero Meles, journalist and historian of mountaineering, and Luca Radaelli, actor and director, take the audience on an intense and captivating journey through figures who, in different eras, found in the mountains a refuge, an escape route, a space for resistance and redemption.
🏔️ The mountains as a place of freedom
The mountains have always been seen as something other: wild, difficult, far from the control of established powers.
They are a space where people seek shelter, but also one where they can imagine a different life. A physical and symbolic place, capable of attracting those who do not identify with the imposed order and feel the need to choose their own path.
📖 Rebels, fugitives, visionaries
The story spans very different eras and characters.
On Mount Leda in Crete, Zeus finds refuge while fleeing from Cronos; on Vesuvius hides Spartacus, the rebel slave who challenges the power of Rome; Fra Dolcino moves from mountain to mountain preaching a religion closer to nature; on Mount Amiata, the anarchist David Lazzaretti founds his community; finally, during the Resistance, the mountains themselves become the setting for the struggle against Nazifascism.
Stories far apart in time, united by a common thread: the mountains as a space of opposition, choice, dignity and freedom.
🎭 A lecture-performance between history and theater
“I ribelli della montagna” is not a simple lecture and not just a theatrical performance.
It is a story that intertwines historical outreach, literary narrative and stage presence, alternating words, suggestions and images to give the audience back the charm of a mountain experienced not only as a landscape, but as a place of the soul.
The historian’s voice and the actor’s voice come together to build an engaging journey, capable of speaking to mountain enthusiasts, history lovers and anyone who feels the call of freer, less-traveled paths.
🔥 The call of rebel paths
The mountains are not just a natural refuge.
In Meles and Radaelli’s account, they become almost a living force, capable of connecting with the most unyielding side of human beings: the one that does not yield, that seeks justice, that dreams of a different world.
Among narrow paths, rugged landscapes and distant peaks, we discover that freedom is never an abstract concept, but something that is won step by step.
