Discovering the churches of Bormio - Guided tour of the Church of the Holy Spirit led by the “Volunteers for Culture”.
Church of the Holy Spirit
Now deconsecrated, it was recently purchased and restored by the Municipality of Bormio
Since the beginning of the 19th century, the building has been abandoned as a place of worship and has since become first a barn, then a tool shed, a dormitory and finally a private home. The building is well worth a visit thanks to the beautiful frescoes preserved inside and enhanced by the recent restoration work.
As for the origin of the paintings, the wall and apse frescoes can be dated to the 15th century, while the vault, stylistically and thematically unified, appears to date back to the first half of the 16th century. Among the most important frescoes are The Coronation of the Virgin (probably the work of the workshop of Giovannino da Sondalo) and the scene of the Virgin Ursula together with her husband, attributed to Bertolino de Buris.
