Leave your car in Bormio and experience the mountains in a sustainable way.
This Stelvio PassiGreen itinerary lets you explore some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Stelvio National Park by taking advantage of the summer bus service that connects Bormio to the Stelvio Pass and the Cancano Lakes.
The hike begins at the Umbrail Pass but can also start from the Stelvio Pass, one of Europe’s most iconic Alpine passes, located in the heart of the Stelvio National Park. From here, the trail quickly leaves the road behind to immerse you in a high-altitude environment characterized by sweeping views of the Ortles-Cevedale peaks and the mountains overlooking the Braulio Valley.
Crossing ancient military mule trails and high-mountain pastures, you reach the Forcola area, from where the route continues toward Malga Pedenolo. This section represents one of the most authentic and least-visited areas in the entire region, where the landscape alternates between glacial valleys, alpine meadows, and sweeping views of the Valtellina mountains.
The descent gradually leads to the Cancano Lakes, among the most popular natural areas in Upper Valtellina. Here, the route ends near the Torri di Fraele and the PassiGreen bus stops, which allow you to return to Bormio without needing to retrieve a car.
This is an ideal itinerary for those who want to enjoy a truly “car-free” experience, reducing traffic on the Alpine passes and helping to protect one of the Alps’ most precious natural environments.
